Empire creates world exclusive with first-ever light-up cover for Tron Ares Issue
Bauer Media UK’s Empire magazine launches a world-first illuminated cover, merging print with cinematic storytelling.
Empire magazine, published by Bauer Media UK, has produced a publishing first with its August 2025 issue: a limited-edition light-up cover marking the return of the Tron film franchise. Officially launched this week, the cover uses a hidden battery and push-button mechanism to illuminate the new Light Cycle featured in Tron: Ares, due for UK cinema release in October.
The film, directed by Joachim Rønning, continues the Tron saga with updated visuals, a new storyline, and a soundtrack by Nine Inch Nails. While finishing the film, Rønning took the time to post a video of Empire’s special issue on his own Instagram account, direct from the movie’s visual-effects studio.
The project highlights how print magazines can still deliver high-impact, tactile experiences that distinguish them from digital platforms. Covers remain a strategic branding tool—offering both visibility at retail and potential viral traction online when well executed.
Chris Lupton, Creative Director at Empire, says: "This kind of cover is bold, it’s technical, and it reminds us that print still has the power to innovate and surprise. In a world where so much of design lives on-screen, seeing something so tactile, physical, and imaginative is inspiring."
Empire is not alone in experimenting with cover formats. The New York Times Magazine used thermo-reactive ink in a 2016 climate change issue, while The Drum introduced augmented reality covers in 2018, showcasing how innovative formats can drive audience engagement and advertiser interest.
The special edition is available in the UK in select WHSmith stores and online at greatmagazines.co.uk, alongside standard and digital versions.
